SandBox Utah: St. George News "FLYING HIGH AT 13TH ANNUAL KITE FESTIVAL"

"The Dixie Escalante Electric Kite Festival will be flying through St. George April 21.
The Kite Festival is a tradition for the community, and this is the 13th year of amazing kites and children being awarded for their reading.

The Dixie Escalante Electric Company is the primary sponsor of the event, and festival manager Stella Iverson said the festival is a great community event for children and adults alike.

“It is a fun event to start up spring,” Iverson said. “The icing on the cake [is] we donate back to the Washington County School District’s literacy program.”

Each year, the Dixie Escalante Electric Company prints 15,000 reading charts for students and takes them to schools in the community. Students fill out these charts when they read, and qualifying students who read enough earn a kite or a book for their efforts. Iverson said this is her favorite part of the festival.

“My favorite part is kids coming with reading charts in hand,” she said. “Three months of hard work and the kids are excited to get their reward.” (Read more?  Click title)
