SandBox Utah: Red State "BREAKING: David Axelrod Endorses Mitt Romney for President "

Erick Erickson:
"Breaking news with a hat tip to Kevin Eder for highlighting it for me:

David Axelrod, Chief Strategist for President Barack Obama, endorsed Mitt Romney for President on Fox News Sunday this morning. He told Chris Wallace, “The choice in this election is between an economy that produces a growing middle class and that gives people a chance to get ahead and their kids a chance to get ahead and an economy that continues down the road we’re on.”

That is precisely right and precisely what Mitt Romney’s campaign has been telling people. Good to see David Axelrod agrees.

I couldn’t have said it better myself:

SandBox Utah: Rasmussen Reports "What They Told Us: Reviewing Last Week’s Key Polls "

"The game is on: Mitt Romney is now the presumptive Republican presidential nominee following Rick Santorum’s decision Tuesday to put his campaign on hold.

Romney has been at center stage during the GOP primary process. Now, Scott Rasmussen explains in his latest syndicated column, President Obama “becomes the defining figure of the general election campaign.

Now it's about Obama, not Romney, as the election becomes primarily a referendum on his first term in office.”

The two men have been running neck-and-neck for weeks in our daily presidential tracking poll, and it’ll be interesting to see if the numbers change in any way now that the Republican contest is essentially at an end.

Rasmussen Reports will continue releasing daily Obama-Romney matchup findings every morning at 9:30 Eastern from now until Election Day...." (Read more?  Click title)

SandBox Utah: Intellectual Conservative "Mitt and Mormonism"

(See related post here and related Town Hall story here)

Jack Kerwick:
"On Wednesday April 4, MSNBC host Lawrence O’Donnell remarked that while Judaism and Christianity are thousands of years in the making, Mormonism, in stark contrast, is a mere 182 years old. Mormonism was “created” in 1830 “by a guy in upstate New York” who got “caught having sex” with his “maid” and then “explained to his wife that God told him do it.” Alluding to Mormonism’s historically polygamous character, O’Donnell made sure to mention that Joseph Smith—the man who “invented” Mormonism—eventually went on to accumulate 48 wives.
This isn’t the first time that O’Donnell has sought to discredit Mitt Romney by assailing the former Massachusetts governor’s faith. In 2007, he charged Mormonism with being a “racist faith.” O’Donnell states: “As of 1978 it was an officially racist faith, and for political convenience in 1978, it switched.”
Those Republicans who suspect that President Obama and his legions of supporters in the media are going to attack Romney by attacking his faith are correct. Yet it is crucial that they know exactly why this will be their strategy of choice.
For whatever reasons (we needn’t get into them here), Republicans and establishment “conservatives” refuse—adamantly, steadfastly, refuse—to acknowledge two facts about their rivals. First, they refuse to concede how Democratic leftists think. Second, they refuse to recognize that unless they make this first concession, they will lose.
If Romney, the GOP nominee, wasn’t a Mormon, Democrats wouldn’t dream of making this campaign about religion. Republicans must grasp this. They must reckon with the truth that Mormonism, from the leftist’s perspective, is more vulnerable a target than any and every other belief system save for, say, Neo-Nazism...."  (Read more?  Click title)

SandBox Utah: Deseret News "Campaigns to focus on 16 states in the race to 270"

Now that Mitt Romney has the majority of conservatives in a less than lukewarm bliss over his presumptive nomination...it's time to focus on the barn burners that all senate and congressional races are sure to be.

So many open seats on both sides of the aisle with a heavy sprinkle of key power points open for the taking; there is a great deal the average voter needs to get up to informed status on.

Instead of flipping on the TV every night, take an evening or two during the week, hop online and see what folks are just sayin all over the country.  I think you would be surprised at how much we all have in common out here.

Thomas Beaumont:
"President Barack Obama begins his re-election campaign defending traditionally Republican territory that he carried when he won the White House four years ago. Republican Mitt Romney is looking to reclaim any combination of these GOP strongholds now in flux.

In the months leading to the Nov. 6 election, both men will talk about how they will galvanize the nation. But in reality, they will lavish travel, advertising and staff on only a dozen states, and even fewer as the vote nears.

The political spotlight will shine brightly again on Florida, and the Upper Midwest, especially Ohio. But changes in the nation's demographics will mean heavy attention paid to the Mid-Atlantic and Southwest...."

SandBox Utah: Davis Clipper "Hatch and the offensive scale"

Bryan Gray:
"It’s easy to offend people. As local author Terry Tempest Williams said, “Every time you pick up your pencil, you betray someone.”

And it is even easier to ruffle feathers as a politician. Humorist Jimmy Fallon noted last week, “Mitt Romney went three for three by winning primaries in Maryland, Wisconsin, and Washington D.C. Not to be outdone, Rick Santorum went three for three by offending women, atheists, and Latinos.”

Orrin Hatch’s re-election bid can be seen similarly. In office since Methuselah was a tyke, Hatch has had a long period and thousands of speeches in which to offend someone.

This year his main opponent is Bountiful business owner, Dan Liljenquist, unknown to most of the state. That’s an advantage for Liljenquist since we cannot be offended by someone we’ve never heard of.

Forget all the campaign talk about experience and super PACs and Liljenquist’s work on state benefit issues. The key to this election, according to an extensive Cyclops poll, is the “Offensive Scale.”...."

SandBox Utah: Right Scoop "CBS News: Foreign Workers Taking Stimulus Jobs"

SandBox Utah: Utah Pulse "Jeff Thredgold's Tea Leaf - '8.2%…or 11.3%?'"

The real unemployment rate is definitely 11.3%.  Higher when you factor in all those underemployed and/or unable to qualify for benefits any longer.  Wouldn't it be nice to have mainstream media report the factual numbers?  Sort of puts us all 'between a Barack and a hard place' when they do not.

Jeff Thredgold:
"March employment gains were less than expected, less than exciting, less than worth writing home about and will again pose the question of whether U.S. job creation is about to slow as summer months approach.  Such a pattern occurred during the past two years.

The American economy added 120,000 net new jobs during March, sharply below the consensus view of 205,000 net new jobs.  The gain was the smallest in five months and was less than half the average gain of the three prior months.  In addition, previously reported job gains during January and February were revised higher by only 4,000 jobs, breaking a pattern of sizable upward revisions to prior data that had largely been in place for some time....."  (Read more? via Deseret News:
"Results of delegate voting from county political conventions Saturday in Salt Lake and Utah counties:
In most cases, tallies are for the final round of voting, after all but two candidates were eliminated in a first or other earlier round. A candidate receiving 60 percent or more in delegate voting bypasses a primary election and will be on the ballot in November.

In some Salt Lake County GOP races, nominees are listed but vote tallies were not available late Saturday...."  (Read more?  Click title)

What is Utah's SandBox Commentators?

An experiment is the full answer.  In the upper corner of the left sidebar, click on the country road photo icon and jump over to our home hub.  'Colorado's SandBox Commentators'.

Unapologetically pursuing and tracking patterns within the news others make since 2010.

You should also read up on our 'Rules, Regs and Worth'  which is found here.  Overall, there is where you will find the fastest insight into what we're all about.

We're not just another news roundup blog.  Tune in for a few months, preferably daily and if not then at least weekly and you will notice the patterns we see in Utah news, folks, information and events.  We are a comfortable and open forum for avatars in commentary.  Most of us Independent Conservatives, Republicans and Libertarians.  Definite lean right.  With that said, we have a healthy number of  reasonable liberals who wear 'hearing aids' and do listen....who call us their 'home hub' as well.  Makes for some lively conversational threads once in awhile and for sure, reveals 'social Darwinism' at its finest.

Forewarned that cops, military, lawyers, construction folks and the business minded follow us pretty closely.  I think it's because they think in logical patterns (for the most part) and that they also gain insight into a lot of issues and such that their lines of work are oriented toward.

We are not going to come in here and insult Utahans intelligence by commenting like a bunch of know-it-alls.  Quite a few of us blog regularly on national political blogs such as Red State.  We also love our politics and surf mercilessly for good conversation on areas of interest.

As your moderator, I am trying to get away from the 'kid's' (commentators) that hang around all the SandBoxBlog family of blogs referring to me as 'Nanny'.  Yes, it does fit in many ways, not the least of which is my zero tolerance level for bad behaviors going on in blog threads.  You were raised better than that and minding your manners is 'anticipated'.  I believe in you showing me that you can play nice in our SandBox and if you find yourself in a bit of a spot with me or your fellows; you can then show me how respectful you can be.  Takes an awful lot to be tossed out of here for good.

Posting will happen daily, for the most part.  Please email any great Utah news sources, blogs or Independent media that you want me to look over.  If anyone knows of a phenomenal professional photographer that would like free advertising linked up to them for a daily Morning Photo (see Colorado's SandBox Commentators for examples) I appreciate the referral.

The daily posts follow a certain editorial flow.  We start off with Human Interest stories, then go to local and state (sometimes regional and national) politics, environment and education and opinion.  We then jump to law enforcement, military, justice and courts within the state and region.  End up with a look at national and world politics.  Sometimes welcoming guest bloggers.

Thanks for stopping by and we hope you'll jump in with some comments that help us get to know the folks over in Utah a bit better than we do now.

 Mike Gorrell:
"Mark Crockett and Mike Winder left behind four fellow Republicans in the race for Salt Lake County mayor, but neither could muster enough support at Saturday’s GOP county convention to avoid a June 26 primary.

Crockett, a former county councilman and businessman, came close.....

......Winder, who overcame a rebuke from county Republican Party officials while being criticized extensively and sued for writing newspaper articles under the pseudonym Richard Burwash, intends to spread the message that he is the candidate of limited government and economic development.

"I have a track record," he said, citing his successes in running the state’s second most-populous city and a temperament that will allow him to work well with officials from cities in the county."

Members of the Coast Guard Ice Patrol have been braving the cold to mark and track icebergs in the Northern Atlantic Ocean since 1913. They say they've had a flawless track record.

SandBox Utah: St. George News "FLYING HIGH AT 13TH ANNUAL KITE FESTIVAL"

"The Dixie Escalante Electric Kite Festival will be flying through St. George April 21.
The Kite Festival is a tradition for the community, and this is the 13th year of amazing kites and children being awarded for their reading.

The Dixie Escalante Electric Company is the primary sponsor of the event, and festival manager Stella Iverson said the festival is a great community event for children and adults alike.

“It is a fun event to start up spring,” Iverson said. “The icing on the cake [is] we donate back to the Washington County School District’s literacy program.”

Each year, the Dixie Escalante Electric Company prints 15,000 reading charts for students and takes them to schools in the community. Students fill out these charts when they read, and qualifying students who read enough earn a kite or a book for their efforts. Iverson said this is her favorite part of the festival.

“My favorite part is kids coming with reading charts in hand,” she said. “Three months of hard work and the kids are excited to get their reward.” (Read more?  Click title)
