SandBoxUtah: Salt Lake Tribune "Utah immigration law could hinge on fate of Arizona’s"

David Montero:
"So now the two sides wait while eight judges sort through the immigration time bomb known simply known as SB1070.

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff read the transcripts of Wednesday’s U.S. Supreme Court hearing on Arizona’s enforcement-only law and said, based on the questioning from the justices, it was difficult to imagine how they wouldn’t uphold provisions of SB1070."........

.......Sandstrom eventually said he didn’t want to do what Arizona did as pressure mounted from the business community, leaders in Utah’s Republican Party and religious groups to avoid passing a copycat of SB1070. "For example, I don’t think it’s practical to check status on every single person on, say, a traffic stop,’ Sandstrom said. "That’s one of the things we negotiated on that bill that I think turned out better than the original language."

So instead of requiring local police to check legal status of people during a lawful stop, Sandstrom’s version only required it be checked on a felony or Class A misdemeanor stop. On other misdemeanors, the check is left to the officer’s discretion..."  (Read the article?  Click title)

SandBoxUtah: Washington Times " Battlegrounds established for Hispanic votes"

Stephen Dinan:
"Dream Act students rallied outside Mitt Romney’s campaign speech in North Carolina on Wednesday, accusing him of forsaking Hispanic immigrants and vowing to make him pay in the November election — even as President Obama’s campaign announced its own outreach efforts to try to shore up his support among Hispanic voters.

The Obama campaign also launched its first set of Spanish-language ads, airing in Colorado, Nevada and Florida, that tout his expansion of federal funding for education.

The moves are designed to try to hold on to Hispanic voters, who backed Mr. Obama 67 percent to 31 percent over John McCain in 2008, and whom the president’s campaign deems critical to a repeat win this year. The campaign laid out a plan to get to that point by attacking Mr. Romney on his immigration stances, while highlighting the federal spending the president has directed at programs important to Hispanics.

“President Obama believes that when we prosper, that all of us must prosper and that we recognize all of us are in this together,” said San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro, a national co-chairman of Mr. Obama’s re-election campaign. “Mitt Romney doesn’t believe that. His words and his actions make that clear.”
At stake is the fastest-growing bloc in American politics...." (Read more?  Click title)

SandBox Utah: They Come to America "The Cost of Illegal Immigration"

SandBox Utah: ABC 4 "Utah Latino organizations encouraging minorities to vote"

Antonio Lujan:
"SALT LAKE CITY (ABC 4 News) - The Latino population is at 17 percent in Salt Lake County and it continues to grow, but when it comes to their involvement in politics it is very limited. Latino organizations are reaching out to the minority population to encourage people to vote.

As a matter of fact, only 2 percent of Latinos in the county are voting.

Many say they don't get involved because many of their issues like immigration, have been ignored. However, there is a glimmer of hope. Recently, they've seen more Latinos running for office, and that has sparked new interest. "I think it's great Latinos have been given an opportunity to run for various positions, because it's good to have more options," said Juan Manuel Leon, a business owner. ..."

SandBox Utah Standard-Examiner "Many Latinos want 'freebees', yet wave Mexican flag"

Tony Martinez:
"Editor,

I'm responding to April 9 news article, "Where are the Latinos?" This whole article is so wrong in an American paper. My wish would be that the Latinos could be in Mexico casting their ballots and running for office there to help straighten up that cesspool of corruption, because if they claim Latino before American, then Mexico is where they belong! Why don't the "Latinos" get more involved in politics? Why would they spend the time and effort in a conservative state Like Utah.

Ninety-nine percent of those who put "Latino" in front of "American," are Obama supporters and want the government freebees, that are not really free, but paid by taxpayer dollars. They really couldn't care less! I read letter after letter to the editor from "Latinos." Of course we can not repeat their names, even though they choose to put their opinions out for us to view. We can't hurt feelings! They claim to have served proud, but every time they speak, they disregard the Constitution, just like their hero, Obama...."
